Effect of Teucrium polium leaf extracts on AMPK level in Isolated Rat Pancreases
Authors
Abstract:
Background: The purpose of this study is to evaluate effects of Teucrium polium (TP) leaf extracts on adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase (AMPK) level in isolated pancreases. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, two groups of rats were used as a control group, and diabetic group. In the end of experimental period the animals were sacrificed then pancreas were removed, then isolated rat pancreas was cultured in buffer with or without TP leaf extracts. Measuring the sample glucose level was carried out by spectrophotometric method ( Jenway ,Model 6505 ,UK, Pars Azmmon Co. ,Tehran, IRAN) . Insulin level was assayed by an enzyme immunoassay ELISA kit specific for rats made by Mercodia Rat insulin ELISA ( 10-1250-01,Mercodia AB, Uppsala, Sweden). The adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase level was determined by ELISA assay method using a rat phosphorylated AMPK ELISA kit ( CSB-E11337r, Cusabio Biotech Co .,LTD). Results: The results indicate that addition of TP leaf extract significantly increased AMPK level and insulin content compared to untreated group (p<0.05). Conclusion: These results support the potential of TP leaf extract as a therapeutic modality for diabetes. However, further studies will be necessary to confirm this potential.

full textIdioblastic Mucilage Cells in Teucrium Polium Leaf. Anatomy and Histochemistry
In the mesophyll of Teucrium polium L. leaves, isolated or grouped idioblastic secretory cells occur in contact with the distal (adaxial) vessel elements of the vascular bundles. They appear to originate from one or more bundle sheath cells and their intracellular space is entirely occupied by the secretory material. The latter has a glycoproteinaceous constitution (mucilage), as histochemical ...

Antibiotics provide the main basis for the therapy of microbial (bacterial and fungal) infections. Since the discovery of these antibiotics and their use as chemotherapeutic agents there was a belief in the medical fraternity that this would lead to the eventual eradication of infectious diseases. However, overuse of antibiotics has become the major factor in the emergence and dissemination of ...
full textANTISPASMODIC EFFECT OF AERIAL PART OF TEUCRIUM POLIUM L. ESSENTIAL OIL ON RAT ISOLATED ILEUM IN VITRO
Teucrium polium L. (Lamiaceae) is used in the traditional medicine of Iran for the treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. The essential oil from the aerial parts of T polium was assessed for antispasmodic activity and compared with the effect of atropine and dicyclomine. Acetylcholine and KC I were used for induction of contraction on rat isolated ileum. Teucrium polium essen...
full textEffects of Teucrium polium aerial parts extracts on malonyl-CoA decarboxylase level
Malonyl-CoA decarboxylase (MCD) is an enzyme involved in the decarboxylation of malonyl-CoA to acetyl-CoA. In order to explore the hypothesis that the changing plant materials’ MCD activity level can serve as therapy to diabetics, the effect of Teucrium polium compounds was studied in a diabetic rat model. In this experimental study, two groups of rats, a control and a diabetic group, each incl...
